189 Visa Document Checklist

You will need to provide documents to support the claims you make in your Expression of Interest and show you meet the other eligibility criteria for Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa.

Document Checklist for 189 Visa (Points Tested Stream)

For all Applicants to be included in the application

The following documents are required from all applicants for 189 visa:

  • Identity documents such as passport, birth certificate, proof of name change such as marriage or divorce certificate.
  • If you are or have been married, widowed, divorced or permanently separated, provide proof such as marriage certificates, divorce documents, death certificates, separation documents or statutory declarations.
  • Provide an overseas police certificate from every country, including your home country, where you spent a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years since you turned 16, any military service records or discharge papers if you served in the armed forces of any country.
  • Passport size photographs.

For Primary Applicant

The following documents are required from the primary applicant for visa 189:

  • All academic certificates and transcripts.
  • COE's of your course completed from Australia; and Course completion letter.
  • English test results such as IELTS or PTE Academic or TOEFL or OET.
  • Professional Year certificate (If you have).
  • NAATI Certificate (If you have).
  • Evidence of any specialist qualification.
  • Skills Assessment outcome letter.
  • Any professional registration or license certificate.
  • Employment reference letters and evidence of payslips, bank statements, tax records and superannuation record.
  • Your curriculum vitae or resume that includes your full employment and educational history, including dates and positions held within last ten years.
  • If you have a close family member living in 'Designated Regional Area' of Australia then their ID and proof of residence.

For Spouse or De facto Partner

The following documents are required from the spouse or de facto partner of the primary applicant for 189 visa Australia:

  • English test results such as IELTS or PTE Academic or TOEFL or OET (if you are claiming partner English points).
  • Skills Assessment outcome letter (if you are claiming partner skilled occupation points).
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable); or for de facto relationship provide either evidence that your relationship is registered by an Australian State or Territory; or enough documents to prove you have been in a de facto relationship with your partner for at least 12 months before you apply.

All documents are to be color pdf files. Where documents are not in English, an authorized translated version needs to be provided.

Subclass 189 Visa Document Checklist (New Zealand Stream)

For Primary Applicant

  • Evidence of usually resident in Australia for a continuous period of at least 5 years immediately before the date of the application that was started on or before 19 February 2016 such as rental lease agreement, utility bills, bank statements, drivers license, registration, employment contract/s etc.
  • Evidence that the primary applicant's income tax liability in relation to 3 income years during the period of 5 years ending immediately before the date of the application such as Notice of Assessment from Australian Taxation office.

If primary applicant is seeking exemption from income threshold

Exemption due to COVID-19 Pandemic

  • The applicant’s pay slips, salary advices or employment contracts (stating the applicant’s salary) for a period in the 2019–20 or 2020–21 income year to demonstrate that the applicant was likely to meet the income threshold in the 2019–20 or 2020–21 income year; or
  • Either a signed letter written on a company letterhead by the applicant's current or former employer stating the applicant’s salary before 1 February 2020; and
  • If the applicant’s employment was terminated then a statutory declaration by the applicant’s former employer stating that the circumstances of the applicant’s dismissal were related to the COVID-19 pandemic effects on the business.
  • A statutory declaration by the applicant’s employer acknowledging the applicant’s 2019–20 or 2020–21 taxable income has reduced, due to: reduced availability of shifts/hours resulting in a drop in income; or the applicant contracting COVID-19 or having caring responsibilities for a person who contracted COVID-19, preventing the applicant from working and resulted in a drop in income; or medically directed orders to self-isolate, preventing the applicant from working and resulting in a drop in income; or caring responsibilities as a result of COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns (eg schools, childcare centres) that prevented the applicant from working and resulted in a drop in income
  • Services Australia Centrelink letters showing the applicant claimed and received JobSeeker payments for a period in the 2019–20 or 2020–21 income year.
  • Documentation proving that the applicant had access to the JobKeeper Wage Subsidy for a period in the 2019–20 or 2020–21 income year including: employee nomination form or other statements or documents provided by the Australian Taxation Office demonstrating that the applicant had access to the JobKeeper Wage Subsidy; or alternative statements provided by the Australian Taxation Office at the applicant’s request.

Any of the following documents for exemption due to parental or carer's leave:

  • a statutory declaration by the applicant setting out the applicant’s personal circumstances;
  • a statutory declaration by the applicant’s employer stating a return to work date and the applicant’s income amount;
  • a birth certificate for the applicant’s child;
  • a medical certificate for carer responsibilities;
  • notice of approved parental leave.

Any of the following documents for exemption due to injury and rehabilitation:

  • a statutory declaration by the applicant setting out the applicant’s personal circumstances;
  • a statutory declaration by the applicant’s employer stating a return to work date and the applicant’s income amount;
  • a medical certificate for the applicant;
  • official compensation documentation relating to the applicant;
  • official rehabilitation documentation relating to the applicant.

Any of the following documents that assigns primary care of a child to the applicant and is signed by all parents, or has a court seal attached:

  • a parenting order;
  • a registered parenting plan;
  • a written parenting plan;
  • a consent order.

Subclass 189 Visa Checklist (Hong Kong Stream)

If you are applying for visa subclass 189 in HK stream, then you will need to provide the following documents:

  • Evidence that you hold Subclass 485, Subclass 482 or Subclass 457 visa that was granted to you on the basis of satisfying the primary criteria.
  • Your British National (Overseas) or Hong Kong passport which is valid at the time your visa application is made.
  • You must have been usually resident in Australia for a continuous period of at least 4 years immediately before the date of your application.
