Subclass 887 Visa Requirements

Have an Eligible Visa

An applicant must hold or have held one of the following visas: subclass 489, 495, 496, 475 or 487 visa for a total of 2 years before a skilled regional (permanent) subclass 887 visa application is made.

Have Complied with Conditions of Your Eligible Visa

You, and any family members holding an eligible visa, must have complied with the conditions attached to your eligible visa when in Australia. This requirement applies for the whole period you have held those visas.

Meet Health Requirements for 887 Visa

You and your dependent family members who apply for the visa with you must meet Australia's health requirement. The Department of Home Affairs may request health examination for family members not accompanying you to Australia.

Meet Character Requirements for 491 Visa

You and your dependent family members who apply for the visa with you must meet Australia's character requirement. The Department of Home Affairs may request character examination for family members not accompanying you to Australia.

Have Paid Your Debt to Australian Government

If you or any of your dependent family members including those who do not apply for the visa with you, owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.

Sign the Australian Values Statement

If you are 18 years of age or older, you must have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet and confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you sign or accept the Australian Values Statement.

Have Paid Back your Debt to the Australian Government

If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.

Not Have had a Visa Cancelled or Refused

You might not be eligible to apply for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you last entered Australia.

Subclass 887 Visa English Requirements

  • You are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland. British National (Overseas) passports are not acceptable as evidence of functional English; or
  • You completed a degree, a higher degree, a diploma or a trade certificate in an institution in or outside Australia that required at least two years of full time study and all instructions were in English; or
  • You undertook your education at a primary school and at least 3 years of secondary school where all instruction was in English in or outside Australia; or
  • You undertook your education at a secondary school for atleast 5 years in or outside Australia where all instruction was in English; or
  • You undertook your education for at least 1 year of full time or part time equivalent study towards an award, at an institution in Australia where all instruction was in English; or
  • An average band score of at least 4.5 based on the 4 test components; or
  • A total band score of at least 32 based on the 4 test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening; or
  • A total band score of at least 30 based on the 4 test components; or
  • A total band score of at least 147 based on​ the 4 test components; or
  • Have paid the second instalment of the visa application charge for your eligible visa; or
  • Pay the second instalment of the visa application charge when we ask for it.

Subclass 887 Visa Work Experience Requirements

When you apply for this visa you must have worked full-time for at least 12 months (unless COVID-19 concessions apply), as the holder of one or more eligible visas:

  • In a regional or low-population growth metropolitan area, if a state or territory government nominated you for your eligible visa; or
  • A designated area of Australia if a family member had sponsored you for your eligible visa.

You can combine work in concurrent part-time employment to satisfy this requirement. You can work in your nominated occupation or any other occupation. Full time work means 35 hours per week.

Subclass 887 Visa Residence Requirements

At the time you apply for Skilled Regional (Permanent) Subclass 887 you must have lived for a total of at least 2 years (unless COVID-19 concessions apply), as the holder of one or more eligible visas, in:

  • A regional or low-population growth metropolitan area if a state or territory government nominated you for your eligible visa; or
  • A designated area of Australia if a family member sponsored you for your eligible visa.
