Subclass 189 Independent Visa Points

189 Visa Independent Visa Points are based on certain selection factors such as age, education, work experience, English proficiency and some other factors prescribed by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, and discussed in detail below.

Subclass 189 Visa Points

The following table shows how points will be allocated for Visa 189 for various categories:

Age

The following points will be allocated for 189 Visa Australia for age category:

  • 25 Points - If you are not less than 18 and under 25.
  • 30 Points - If you are not less than 25 and under 33.
  • 25 Points - If you are not less than 33 and under 40.
  • 15 Points - If you are not less than 40 and under 45.

English

The following points will be allocated for Visa 189 Australia for English language category:

  • 20 Points - If you have superior English (8.0 Each in IELTS General, A each in OET, 26 for speaking 29 for reading 30 for writing 28 for listening in TOEFL iBT, 79 each in PTE Academic).
  • 10 Points - If you proficient English (7.0 Each in IELTS General, B each in OET, 23 for speaking 24 for reading 27 for writing 24 for listening in TOEFL iBT, 65 each in PTE Academic).

Education

The following points will be allocated for Skilled Independent Visa 189 for Education category:

  • 20 Points - If you meet the requirements for the award of a doctorate by an Australian educational institution; or the award of a doctorate, by another educational institution, that is of a recognised standard.
  • 15 Points - If you meet the requirements for the award of at least a bachelor degree by an Australian educational institution; or the award of at least a bachelor degree, by another educational institution, that is of a recognised standard.
  • 10 Points - If you meet the requirements for the award of a diploma by an Australian educational institution.
  • 10 Points - If you meet the requirements for the award of a trade qualification by an Australian educational institution.
  • 10 Points - If you have attained a qualification or award recognised by the relevant assessing authority for the applicant’s nominated skilled occupation as being suitable for the occupation.

Overseas Experience

The following points will be allocated for Subclass 189 Visa for overseas experience category:

  • 05 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 36 months in the last 10 years.
  • 10 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 60 months in the last 10 years.
  • 15 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 96 months in the last 10 years

Australian Experience

The following points will be allocated for Skilled Independent Visa 189 for Australian experience category:

  • 05 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 12 months in the last 10 years.
  • 10 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 36 months in the last 10 years.
  • 15 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 60 months in the last 10 years.
  • 20 Points - If you had been employed inside Australia in your nominated occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation for a period of 96 months in the last 10 years.

Professional Year

The following points will be allocated for 189 Visa for Professional year category:

  • 05 Points - If you have completed a professional year in Australia in your nominated skilled occupation; or a closely related skilled occupation; for a period totaling at least 12 months in the 48 months immediately before that time.

Specialist Education

The following points will be allocated for Visa Subclass 189 for Specialist education category:

  • 05 Points - If you meet the requirements for the award of a specialist educational qualification, by an Australian educational institution which is a masters degree by research; or a doctoral degree; and the degree included study for at least 2 academic years at the institution in a field of education of: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Natural and Physical Sciences, Other Natural and Physical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Other Information Technology, Aerospace Engineering and Technology, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology, Engineering and Related Technologies, Geomatic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, Maritime Engineering and Technology, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Technology, Other Engineering and Related Technologies, Process and Resources Engineering.

Australian Study

The following points will be allocated for 189 Visa Australia for Australian study category:

  • 05 Points - If you meet the Australian study requirement by completing 1 or more degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications for award by an Australian educational institution as a result of a course or courses that are registered completed in 16 calendar months as a result of 2 academic year of study; and all instruction was conducted in English; that you undertook while in Australia as the holder of a visa authorising the applicant to study.

Regional Study

The following points will be allocated for Visa 189 Australia for Professional year category:

  • 05 Points - If you meet the Australian study requirement; the location of the campus or campuses at which that study was undertaken is in a designated regional area; and while you undertook the course of study you lived in a designated regional area; and none of the study undertaken constituted distance education.

NAATI

The following points will be allocated for Skilled Independent Visa 189 for NAATI category:

  • 05 Points - If you have a qualification in a particular language awarded or accredited by NAATI; and is at the paraprofessional level or above; certification at the certified provisional level or above; or a community language credential (CCL).

Partner

The following points will be allocated for Subclass 189 Visa for Professional year category:

  • 10 Points - If your spouse or de facto partner is an applicant for the same subclass of visa as the primary applicant; and is not an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen; and is under 45; and nominated a skilled occupation; and had been assessed by the relevant assessing authority for the nominated skilled occupation as having suitable skills for the occupation and the assessment was not for a Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa; and at the time of invitation to apply for the visa, and had competent English.
  • 10 Points - If you do not have a spouse or de facto partner; or your spouse or de facto partner is an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen.
  • 05 Points - If your spouse or de facto partner is an applicant for the same subclass of visa as the primary applicant; and is not an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen; and at the time of invitation to apply for the visa, has competent English.

State and Territory or Family Nomination

The following points will be allocated for Visa Subclass 189 for State and Territory or Family nomination category:

  • 05 Points - If you apply for a Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 visa, and the nominating State or Territory government agency has not withdrawn the nomination.
  • 15 Points - If you apply for a Subclass 489 (Skilled – Regional) (Provisional) visa or a Subclass 491 Visa (Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)), and: the nominating State or Territory government agency has not withdrawn the nomination; or if the applicant is sponsored by a family member, the Minister has accepted the sponsorship

Is 75 Points Enough for 189 Visa?

The points at which the Department of Home Affairs invites applicants to apply for subclass 189 visa varies depending on the volume of the applications at hand with the department and departmental priorities.

How many points do i need for 189 visa?

You need minimum 65 points to be added into the pool for subclass 189 visa EOI's. The actual points at which invitations might be issued for your occupation may be higher.
